Getting ready for NAPLAN in 2020

NAPLAN testing can be stressful for students and parents. Here is some information to help you understand the purpose of NAPLAN and how we can support your child’s education.

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 which tests an individual’s proficiency with the skills associated with literacy and numeracy. It comprises four separate tests in the four areas of reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar, and punctuation) and numeracy. NAPLAN is conducted in all Australian schools in the second week of May.

What are student results showing?

Broadly, the 2019 results show that the educational attainment for students taking NAPLAN, particularly in high school, has not greatly improved since the NAPLAN test started, despite substantial increases in education funding.  While in different states and in certain age groups there are some improvements, many of the positive gains in primary school have not translated into better high school results.

Moreover, some education commentators are concerned that the NAPLAN attainment levels themselves are relatively low compared to standards elsewhere in the world.  This means there is substantial room for students to improve their literacy and numeracy through additional educational support.

How can Master Mind Australia help students to improve literacy and numeracy?

NAPLAN preparation courses are an integral component of our January Jump-Start Program and our April Revision Classes that are delivered on the Christ Church Grammar School and Hale School campuses.

In January students can enrol in six hours of Literacy preparation and a separate six-hour course in Numeracy. With the help of specialist teachers, students will participate in a series of skills enhancing strategies which will better prepare them for the commencement of the new term and help them understand the essential numeracy and literacy skills and knowledge that will be examined by the NAPLAN assessments in May.
